What is in a Pina Colada drink?
Did you know Piña Colada means “strained pineapple”? Piña coladas are cocktails made with cream of coconut, rum, and freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice. Some people use coconut milk or coconut cream instead.
You can blend it with ice for a frozen version, and any version can be garnished with a pineapple slice and a Maraschino cherry!
Ingredients for Pina Colada Fruit Dip
Gather together these deliciously simple ingredients:
- 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon coconut extract
- 1 tablespoon rum extract
- ½ cup sweetened coconut
- 20 ounces of canned pineapple tidbits
- 20 ounces crushed pineapple, drained
- 8 ounces Cool Whip (or use my Stabilized Whipped Cream recipe!)
Is there alcohol in this Piña Colada dip?
Whether or not your dip has alcohol depends on the rum extract you use. Natural rum extract does have alcohol in it. Imitation rum extract usually does not contain alcohol.
Because this recipe only calls for 1 tablespoon of rum extract, any alcohol would be very diluted when mixed with the other ingredients, making this safe for kids to eat. If you have any concerns or restrictions, you can either use an alcohol-free rum extract or substitute imitation vanilla extract (though the flavor will be slightly different.)
How to make Pina Colada Dip
This fluffy fruit dip is so easy to make and is a great way to serve up something sweet without having to heat up the oven and bake desserts!
- Drain the Pineapple: Both the pineapple tidbits and crushed pineapple need to be drained in order to get the best results. For the tidbits, place a strainer over a small bowl, pour the tidbits in, and let them drain for at least 10 minutes. Open the can of crushed pineapple and just pour the juice out while pressing down on the lid to drain.
- Make the Cream Cheese Mixture: Mix the room-temperature cream cheese until smooth using a hand mixer or electric mixer. Add the powdered sugar, rum extract, and coconut extract. Beat until well combined.
- Add fruit: Mix the coconut, pineapple tidbits, and crushed pineapple into the cream cheese fruit dip. Mix well, then gently fold in the Cool Whip with a rubber spatula until thoroughly combined.
- Serve: You can serve this Piña Colada fruit dip right away, but it tastes best when refrigerated overnight to let the flavors deepen. When you’re ready to serve it, transfer it to a serving bowl with a fruit tray for a beautiful presentation. Fill the tray with fresh fruit and other snacks.
What should I serve with this Pineapple Cream Cheese Dip?
You can dip almost anything into this sweet pineapple dip. Here is a suggested list of some of our favorite fruit and other dippable snacks:
- Strawberries
- Apples
- Pineapple Chunks
- Cherries
- Pears
- Graham Crackers
- Vanilla Wafers

How to store leftover Piña Colada dip
If you have any of this tasty dip left, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last for 3-4 days.
Can I freeze leftover dip?
I do not recommend freezing Pina Colada dip as the cream cheese tends to separate and crumble when it thaws. This can affect the taste and texture.
