Until now, I always thought of applesauce as something that was just. . . fine. You know, I’d eat it, but I never thought of it as a food to be excited about.
This homemade BAKED Applesauce changed my mind.

Why this Homemade Applesauce Recipe is Best
- Apple chunks. Unlike store bought versions, this sauce has some texture. The apple pieces hold their shape as this bakes, then melt in your mouth when you take a bite.
OR, you can use an immersion blender and make it completely smooth, too. - Cinnamon and vanilla. This vanilla brings out the sweetness of the apple while the cinnamon adds a light spice.
- Easy to make. Most of the cooking time is hands off while the applesauce bakes.
- Your house will smell amazing. All the cozy aromas of apple and cinnamon fill your kitchen when you make this applesauce!
The aroma of baking apples reminds me falls when we lived in New England. We’d go apple picking then come home to turn our spoils into everything from apple butter to Apple Muffins. I may have gotten these particular apples from the store instead of a country orchard but they made me just as happy simmered into this perfect cinnamon applesauce.
What do I need?
Here’s what you need to make the BEST homemade applesauce.
- apples
- sugar
- cinnamon
- vanilla
So simple. So good.
What kind of apples are best?
I recommend using a combination of sweet and tart apples for best flavor. In my recipe, I use half Granny Smith and half Honey Crisp. Pink Lady and Fuji apples are other great choices for homemade applesauce.
Tips and Tricks
- Feel free to adjust the sugar to your taste. I find that this Baked Applesauce is on the sweeter side. For less sweetness, reduce the sugar by about 2 tablespoons.
- Use a potato masher to crush the apples after baking. You can make your applesauce as smooth or chunky as you like!
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. Enjoy within 3 days. I think it tastes best served warm but leftovers are delicious cold as well.

This sounds delicious. I do the same, but add 1/4 cup of water and also a 1/4 cup of brown sugar. So yummy!!! I’ve never tried baking it. I’ll definitely have to try that!!

Hi! This looks amazing and I can’t wait to try it! I do have a question, though, and I can’t find a square answer anywhere on the innerwebs. If I make this applesauce (or apple butter, pumpkin butter, etc) in the crock pot, can it still be canned? If so, how? I’m dying to make our local apples last all year! :o)
Lynne says
I’m sorry, Caroline, I don’t have any idea. I have never canned anything, so couldn’t give you an answer. 🙁
Good luck in your search!

Put apple sauce (apple butter) into clean jars while hot sealed with lid and hot bath them
saufitay says
Pardon me…how do we eat this eg apply on bread, toast or ???
Lynne says
Saufitay,
I serve it in a bowl to my family. We also enjoy it as a side dish at dinner some nights.
Just as it is is the best way to eat it, I think!
Adrienne says
Hi, have you made this in the slow cooker since the original post? And roughly how many cups does this yield? I see it says 8 people but everyone portions differently! Thanks 🙂
Lynne says
Adrienne, I have not, but definitely want to!
I believe the portions came to about one cup or a little more for each person, so figure about 8 cups.
