Each batch of these classic oatmeal cookies tells a story, and every bite is a reminder of the warmth and comfort of home. Nana’s perfect recipe has been passed down through generations, ensuring that her legacy lives on and continues to bring happiness and delight!
Ingredients for Nana’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
Gather together the following ingredients:
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¾ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 cups old-fashioned oats
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
How to Make Nana’s Oatmeal Cookies
You can whip up my favorite homemade oatmeal cookies in just a few easy steps, in no time at all!
- First, heat oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a cookie sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs and mix well.
- In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt. Add the oats and mix well.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Then add the walnuts and raisins and stir until well incorporated.
- Using a medium cookie scoop (2 tablespoons), place dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet about an inch apart. Flatten slightly.
- Bake cookies for 10-15 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden brown. Let cool slightly on the pan, then move to a wire rack to cool completely.
Serving and Storing Oatmeal Cookies
Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature to keep them fresh. If you prefer a softer texture, place a slice of bread in the container to help retain moisture. Avoid storing them in the refrigerator, which can dry the cookies.
Nana’s oatmeal raisin cookies are so good with a glass of cold milk or your afternoon coffee! They also make a tasty addition to any cookie tray or gift box.
FAQs
Can I use instant oats or steel cut oats instead of old-fashioned oats?
While quick oats can be used in a pinch, they produce a softer texture. Old-fashioned oats (also called rolled oats) provide a heartier bite and better texture for these cookies.
Steel-cut oats provide more fiber and density but require more liquid and a longer cooking time. I would not use them in this recipe.
How long do these cookies stay fresh?
When stored in an airtight container at room temperature, Nana’s Oatmeal Cookies will stay fresh for up to a week. You can also freeze the cookies for up to 3 months, ensuring you always have a sweet treat on hand.
Variations for Nana’s Oatmeal Cookies
These chewy oatmeal raisin cookies are versatile treats that can easily be customized. Here are a few variations and substitutions you can try:
- Leave out the nuts: if you don’t love the crunch of nuts in your cookies, you can leave them out. Alternatively, you could try pecans for a different flavor!
- Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies: If you’re not a fan of raisins, replace them with chocolate chips for a decadent twist on the classic recipe. The combination of chocolate and oats is irresistible!
- Vanilla Glaze: Mimic storebought oatmeal cookies by mixing up a vanilla glaze (a bit of milk and some powdered sugar), then drizzle it over the top or dunk the top of the cookies in it!
Bake a batch of these classic oatmeal raisin cookies with your children or grandchildren, and let them experience the joy of creating something delicious from scratch. The love and memories associated with Nana’s recipe will continue to live on, bringing warmth and happiness to all who taste her special treats!
