A note though, if you have small children, this can be very dangerous as the oil gets extremely hot and they should be supervised AT ALL TIMES.
Popular in the 1970’s, fondue is making a comeback.
I loved this recipe when I was a kid, so I had to buy a fondue pot to specifically make this recipe.
Be sure to keep an eye out because more recipes using this small appliance are on the horizon.
What is French Toast Fondue?
Similar to the breakfast recipe you’re used to, we use French bread cut up into cubes, eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon then dip it into the fondue pot where oil is heated to 375°F.
Each piece of bread is fried for less than a minute, cooled, and then dipped in the maple butter to enjoy!
What kind of fondue pot do I need?
I have purchased this one and I really like it. I highly suggest purchasing an electric appliance because you can do so much more with it.
For this particular recipe, you’ll need a pot where you can heat the oil up to 375° so that it can cook the eggs and sausage.
While there are other fondue pots on the market, using one for a chocolate fondue that uses a tea light or sterno for example wouldn’t be sufficient for this recipe.
How do I do it?
- To begin, push the fondue fork into the crust side of a bread cube.
Using the crust will help hold the bread on the fork when cooking. - Dip the bread into the egg mixture to completely coat, but do not soak.
Soaking the bread will make it to heavy, and it could fall off the fork and also take longer to cook. - Gently place the fork into the pot and let it sit for 30-45 seconds turning it over if necessary to brown both sides.
It will be completely cooked when the bread is a golden brown in color. - When cooking the sausage, pierce it with the fork through the casings on both sides, if possible.
Cook for about 1 minute when sausage has browned. - Transfer items to individual plates to cool and to enjoy with silverware.
Then dip the bread cubes in the maple butter.
Fondue Etiquette
- Use the fondue forks that come with the appliance.
These forks are specifically made for fondue and are small enough so that up to 8 people can cook their food at one time. - Do not eat directly off of the fondue fork.
It will be hot and could burn your mouth. People should transfer the cooked food to their own plate and be supplied with individual utensils to eat with. - Do not double dip.
Give everyone at the table their own dishes of Maple Butter to dip into.
Also, do not put a partially eaten bit of food back on the fondue fork to put back into the pot. - Rest your fondue fork against the side of the pot.
Do not overcrowd and try to give everyone enough space to cook. This will help prevent food from falling off while cooking.
TIPS
- When enjoying fondue, it is best to put the pot in the center of the table on top of a trivet, that way everyone can easily access it.
- Cook no more than 8 pieces of food at a time.
- As the meal progresses, it may be necessary to leave the food in the pot a little longer than directed to completely cook or the heat may need to be adjusted slightly.
- When removing anything you’ve cooked from the pot, place it on an individual plate to cool before dipping it in the butter to eat as IT WILL BE EXTREMELY HOT.

French Toast Fondue
Equipment
- measuring cup
- 2 medium mixing bowls
- Mixer
- 1 fondue pot I have this one.
- 4 fondue forks
Ingredients
Maple Butter
- ½ cup butter room temperature
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup maple syrup
- 1 egg yolk optional
- 1 egg white
French Toast
- 14 ounces French Bread 1 loaf cut into one inch squares
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 3 ½ cups grapeseed oil or the amount suggested by your fondue pot manufacturer. You can also use vegetable oil.
- 12 ounces breakfast sausage cut into 1-inch pieces
Instructions
Maple Butter
- In a mixing bowl, cream the butter until light and fluffy. Add the powdered sugar and maple syrup, and mix until well combined and completely smooth. Put into four small bowls for each person or two for each side of the table. Place into the refrigerator to chill while preparing fondue.
- OPTIONAL – SEE NOTE: In a mixing bowl, cream the butter until light and fluffy. Add the powdered sugar, egg yolk, and maple syrup. Mix until well combined and completely smooth. In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg white until stiff peaks are formed. Fold into the butter mixture, and blend until completely combined. Place into the refrigerator to chill while preparing fondue.
French Toast
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat the eggs well. Whisk in the milk, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. You can divide this into smaller bowls for each person, or into two bowls for each side of the table.
Fondue
- Place a trivet under the fondue pot, and pour the grapeseed oil into the fondue pot. Turn the pot on, and heat according to manufacturer's instructions for oil. The fondue should be ready to enjoy in 10-15 minutes or when a piece of bread placed in the oil becomes golden brown or when a candy/deep fry thermometer reads 375°F.
- Place the fondue fork into a piece of bread, crust first. This will help the bread stay on the fork when it is in the pot. Completely dip the piece of bread into the egg mixture to coat, but not do not allow it to become completely soaked. It will be too heavy and could fall off the fork.
- Gently place the fork into the pot and let it cook for 30 – 45 seconds, until lightly golden. Turn the bread over if needed to cook on both sides. Remove from oil and transfer to plate so that it can cool before dipping it into the maple butter and eating.
- To cook the sausage, place a piece on the fork, piercing through the casings on both sides, if possible. Cook the sausage until nicely browned, about 1 minute.
- As food is removed from the fondue pot, allow it to cool slightly on individual plates before eating because it will be HOT!
